1960 AMERICAN BANDSTAND WITH CHUBBY CHECKER . . .

1960 KENNEDY-NIXON DEBATE . . .

It’s been 50 long years since the first televised presidential debates in American history, but the four TV showdowns between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in the fall of 1960 still hold a prominent — and well-deserved — place in United States political lore.
The details of the debates have been recounted innumerable times in the subsequent decades, with every hand gesture, every utterance and every close-up dissected and weighed for its significance. The stories, meanwhile, of how Nixon showed up to the very first debate looking pale and glistening with sweat beneath the glare of the studio lights, while JFK looked (literally) tanned and rested, haven’t lost any of their power simply because they’re true.
Nixon, after all, did look like death warmed over; Kennedy did look like a movie star. And while pundits and armchair historians like to assert that Kennedy’s media savvy won him the election while Nixon won the debates, it’s virtually impossible to unearth any raw data that positively proves either point.
The fact is, both men were formidable candidates. Each had a strong grasp of the major issues facing the country — the Space Race with the Soviets; America’s role in an increasingly complex global economy; the Civil Right Movement — and each man had very little trouble articulating his and his party’s position on any and all subjects that would bear on the daily lives of average Americans.
In the end, the four debates in 1960 did offer the nation a good, long look at two very different candidates, with two distinct visions for America’s future. It’s remarkable now, however, to recall that Nixon was just four years older than Kennedy: by the look of the two men in the photographs in this gallery, and certainly in the eyes of the tens of millions of people who tuned in to watch them debate, they might as well have been from entirely different generations.
The 1960 campaign for the White House is often called the first “modern” presidential election. All these years later, one would be hard-pressed to find another element of the entire race that feels more familiar than the image of a candidate standing at a lectern, trying with every ounce of his not inconsiderable political skill to connect with the vast, mysterious, invisible electorate out there, watching and listening, somewhere on the other side of that television camera’s unblinking, unforgiving lens.

1950's & 1960's WORKHORSE HUEY HELICOPTER . . .

The Bell UH-1 Iroquois is a military helicopter powered by a single, turboshaft engine, with a two-bladed main rotor and tail rotor. The helicopter was developed by Bell Helicopter to meet the United States Army's requirement for a medical evacuation and utility helicopter in 1952, and first flew on 20 October 1956. Ordered into production in March 1960, the UH-1 was the first turbine-powered helicopter to enter production for the United States military, and more than 16,000 have been produced worldwide.
The first combat operation of the UH-1 was in the service of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. The original designation of HU-1 led to the helicopter's nickname of Huey.  In September 1962, the designation was changed to UH-1, but Huey remained in common use. Approximately 7,000 UH-1 aircraft saw service in Vietnam.

PRE & POST 1960's USA CONFLICTS . . .

WAR. WAR. WAR.

THE USA HAS BEEN IN 13 CONFICTS SINCE 1950.

Korean War (1950–1953) Communist North Korea, supported by China, invaded non-communist South Korea. UN forces, principally made up of U.S. troops, fought successfully to protect South Korea. The Korean War was the first armed conflict in the global struggle between democracy and communism, called the cold war.
Bay of Pigs (1961) The U.S. orchestrated the invasion, an unsuccessful attempt by Cuban exiles to overthrow Fidel Castro's communist regime in Cuba.
Vietnam War (1961–1973) In 1955, communist North Vietnam invaded non-communist South Vietnam in an attempt to unify the country and impose communist rule. The United States joined the war on the side of South Vietnam in 1961, but withdrew combat troops in 1973. In 1975 North Vietnam succeeded in taking control of South Vietnam.
Dominican Republic (1965) President Lyndon Johnson sent marines and troops to quash a leftist uprising in the Dominican Republic, fearing the island nation would follow in the footsteps of Cuba and turn communist.
Lebanon (1982–1984) U.S. troops formed part of a multinational peacekeeping force to help the fragile Lebanese government maintain power.
Grenada (1983) President Reagan invaded the Caribbean nation of Grenada to overthrow its socialist government, which had close ties with Cuba.
Panama (1989) President George H.W. Bush invaded Panama and overthrew Panamanian dictator and drug-smuggler Manuel Noriega.
Gulf War (1991) Iraq invaded Kuwait, and a U.S.-led multinational force came to Kuwait's aid and expelled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's forces.
Somalia (1993) A U.S.-led multinational force attempted to restore order to war-torn Somalia so that food could be delivered and distributed within the famine-stricken country.
Bosnia (1994–1995) During the Bosnian civil war, which began shortly after the country declared independence in 1992, the U.S. launched air strikes on Bosnia to prevent “ethnic cleansing,” primarily by Serbs against Bosnians. The U.S. became a part of NATO's peacekeeping force in the region.
Kosovo (1999) Yugoslavia's province of Kosovo erupted into violence in the spring of 1999. A U.S.-led NATO force intervened with air strikes after Slobodan Milosevic's Serbian forces uprooted the population and embarked on the ethnic cleansing of Kosovo's ethnic Albanian population.
Afghanistan (2001– ) The Taliban government harbored Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda terrorist group, responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. After Afghanistan refused to turn over Bin Laden, the U.S. and UN coalition forces invaded. The Taliban government was ousted and many terrorist camps in Afghanistan were destroyed. U.S. and NATO troops remain in Afghanistan to support its fragile new government.
Iraq War (2003– ) The U.S. and Great Britain invaded and toppled the government of dictator Saddam Hussein. Troops remain in Iraq to combat the insurgency that formed after Hussein's defeat.

PRE 1960'S HAIR AND CLOTHING STYLES . . .

The hairstyles and even the clothes of the 1950's made women look like women and men look like men.  Both sexes were classic and sexy.  People dressed up.  Women wore hats, gloves, high heels and struggled with their  girddles to make them shapely.  Men wore suits, hats, overcoats and were dapper: neat, trim and spruced up.  I remember my father coming home from work and sitting around the house with his neck tie on until he was ready retire for the evening. Then in the 1960's the "Hippie" movement moved in.

With what happened in the 1960's during the "Hippie" movement why would that cause the dresscode to relax? Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points as you want to discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

1960's EATING A HAMBURGER . . .

LETS EAT 60's STYLE!
When I was a youngster I would aways go to the drug store and eat burgers and drink a coke.  Then, the big chain, "McDonalds" opened and WOW! we ate burgers, fries and a coke.  This ushered in the chain burgers joints.  Thus began our trips to our local McDonalds so....
In the early 1960s, McDonald's really began to take off. The growth in U.S. automobile use that came with suburbanization contributed heavily to McDonald's success. In 1961 Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers for $2.7 million, aiming at making McDonald's the number one fast-food chain in the country.

What sort of experience do you remember about going to a favorite hamburger place?  Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points as you want to discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

1967'S JEFFERSON AIRPLANE'S WHITE RABBIT . . .

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Recall Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"FEED YOUR HEAD"

"White Rabbit" is a song from Jefferson Airplane's 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow. It was released as a single and became the band's second top ten success, peaking at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was ranked #478 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, #27 on Rate Your Music's Top Singles of All Time and appears on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

What was going on in the 60's that would cause this group to sing a song like this? Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points as you want to discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

1950's LED TO A 1960's TRAFFIC JAM, WHAT'S THE SOLUTION? . . .

The cars in the 50's were built like tanks and in the 60's the "stream line" style cars and even homes made their way into this era of "new way of thinking".  The men were back from WWII and people were having more babies than ever creating the "Baby Boomer" Class of people which meant more people = more cars and, more cars = more traffic.  Below is a case study showing an example of this era of "new way of thinking" by a study: how to handle the traffic in a big city.
The thinking was (at least the stated thinking) to ring the core with fast moving traffic that would dump into large parking garages at the edges. Then people would walk to their work place. This would (the thinking goes) eliminate congestion in the center. It was a very idealistic and supposedly a very "progressive idea" which many cities considered implementing.
Gradually people began wakeing from their coma and came to realize the damage these highways were doing to our cities. It was the birth of a new way of thinking. In the early 1960's Jane Jacobs published her ground breaking book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" in which she described and exposed the myths of highway planning and the destruction wrought by their construction (among many other urban bungles).

What were they thinking? And, how do we even plan ahead?
1.  What were we suppose to do with all the 1950 tanks after people bought the new "stream line" cars?
2.  Most families had one car, but still, the population was growing at a fast pace.  How do you move these people around and not clog the streets?
3.  What about the cost of gas? Can people afford it?  How do you get the private sector to open enough gas stations to accomodate the amount of cars?  How do you get the gas there?  Are there enough bigger roads to allow trucks to get the gas delivered? Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points as you want to discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

1960's NO-NONSENSE BUSINESS WITH IKE'S ADVICE . . .

My parents said, "Time for gas."  Into the gas station we turned running over the bing-bing, pulling up to the pump as the Gas Attendant ran out to our car saying, "What for you today?"  Then my parent would say, "Hi-test and fill it up" with a reply back from the Attendant, "and check under the hood?"  "Yes, thanks," my parent answered.  Then after the Attendant checked the oil, water in the radiator, looked at the tires and even wiped the windows clean, among other things, he would say, "Ok, that's a $3.00 fill-up, THANKS  AND COME AGAIN!", after my parent paid the bill, our car cranked and off we went.

Why is this so important that the Attendant would ask the things in terms of business sense?  Are there key words that appear in the illustration above that trigger business ideas and express in words how they are implemented in your own business strategies and what effects do they have on your business if any?  Can you tell us a story from your past (from the 60's) that might reflect any of the above attitudes?  Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points as you want to discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

IKE FOR PRESIDENT

Why would IKE warn the U.S.A. about building such a BIG military as he is leaving office in 1961?  At what cost does overextending the military in any direction cause  the U.S.A.?   Which wars was IKE post-war and pre-war to? Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points as you want to discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

DWIGHT EISENHOWER 1952 POLITICAL INFO . . .

BE CAREFUL!
this might make you understand something that we need to learn as a nation.
What kind of change will be necessary to get high prices down? What's step #1, #2, #3, etc....?  And, who can make this happen?  In your opinion should the government marry the business sector and exactly, without making a profit, how will the government actually help the business sector prosper?  If the government does make a profit do you think there's anything wrong with that and why? Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points as you feel you can discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

GAS PRICES 1968 DURING TET OFFENSIVE . . .

Johnson succeeded to the presidency following the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, completed the rest of Kennedy's term and was elected President in his own right, winning by a large margin in the 1964 election. Johnson was greatly supported by the Democratic Party and as President, he was responsible for designing the "Great Society" legislation that included laws that upheld civil rights, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, environmental protection, aid to education, and his "War on Poverty." He was renowned for his domineering personality and the "Johnson treatment," his coercion of powerful politicians in order to advance legislation.

Below is a comparison chart of the two years that ushered in back and forth recessions  making the economy fluctuate high and low causing instability, even gas prices rose.  And also look at the difference between the two years for Federal Spending and Debt and the Consumer Price Index......
1960 Economy
President:                        Dwight D. Eisenhower
Vice President:              Richard M. Nixon
Population:                     180,671,158
Dow-Jones:
High:                                   685
Low:                                    566
Federal Spending:         $92.19 billion
Federal Debt:                  $290.5 billion
Inflation:                           1.4%
Consumer Price Index: 29.6
Unemployment:             5.5%
CONSUMER PRICES: Gallon of Regular Gas  $0.31

1968 Economy
President:                          Lyndon B. Johnson
Vice President:                Hubert H. Humphrey
Population:                       200,706,052
Dow-Jones
High:                                     985
Low:                                      825
Federal Spending:           $178.13 billion
Federal Debt:                    $368.7 billion
Inflation:                            4.2%
Consumer Price Index: 34.8
Unemployment:               3.8%
CONSUMER PRICES:  Gallon of Regular Gas $0.34

Why would the federal spending and the economy start to move the ceiling debt up during this year (1968) of Johnson’s Presidential term?  And, why would the price of gas start to increase during this year in particular?   What formula is used to deduct the C.P.I. figure? And, how can we even get it to line up with a balanced budget? What is happening in our country today that might imitate this same disaster?  How do we stop it? What's your opinion about these facts because they are translating into today's society. And, do you see a current Presidential candidate that can actually understand how to get this under control?  Or, can you suggest one, not currently in the race, that will would make a great President? Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points that you want to discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

MOD CHURCH 1960's STYLE CAUSED . . .

Counterculture Effects.

As the cold war moved into its third decade, cultural currents were changing, particularly among young people. Most continued to share and operate out of the values of their parents, but a significant group, located in large cities and around college campuses, began to reflect behavior that would be called counterculture. They left traditional religion behind them. In the face of the growing attraction of aspects of this set of attitudes, there were a variety of efforts to make religion more relevant to the needs and interests of the young. Malcolm Boyd's Are You Running with Me, Jesus? (1967) was one of the most dramatic evidences of these efforts.

Why would young people leave traditional religion behind during this time period?  What was going on in the USA, socially, politically, or internationally, and even in our education system at that time which were catalysts for this movement?  Start thinking about these things again because history repeats its self. Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points that you want to discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

RICK SANTORUM'S BOOK SAYS ABOUT THE 60's . . .

"We now have a generation that has grown up with the belief, inspired by the Sixties' free-love assault on sexual mores, that true love is a feeling, and that it should not be resisted or constrained--rather, its ultimate validation is through sexual relations, without regard to the outdated social convention of marriage." (Unless he was a particularly precocious conservative, Santorum is channeling the opinions of others in his scorn for the Sixties. He was 11 years old at the time of Woodstock).
Why would Santorum, in his book, "It Takes a Family" say that the sixties sexual free-love disrupted the ideal family unit?  What actually happened in the 60's that caused the sexual free-love? Are the youth of today really understanding what happened in the 60's? Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points that you want to  discuss.  Thanks and come back soon.

EISENHOWER'S 1958-59 RECESSION WHY? . . .

Eisenhower's two terms were peaceful ones for the most part and saw considerable economic prosperity except for a sharp recession in 1958–59. Although he left office in 1961 with low overall approval ratings, his posthumous reputation has grown and in recent surveys of historians, Eisenhower is often ranked as one of the top ten U.S. Presidents.
It seems that when Eisenhower left office in 1961, things were in a mess.  Lets talk about why there was a recession when there seemed to be so much prosperity.  Or, why there was such a low approval rating for such a popular president.  So, in your opinion,  what effort did they put into action to bring the U.S. out of that recession, if anything or how would that have effected the economy in the early to late 60's? Please opine in 50 words or less about as many or as few points that you want to discuss. Thanks.
